The Lower Depths
The Lower Depths are the gray wastes, a desolate sheol full of hungry forgotten things. It’s a cold, dreary and lifeless place in which things dwell that have been there since before the creation of the universe. The Helminth, planet-devouring god-worms, burrow through the depths, consuming all they come across.
The Chtonians clawed their way out of the Lower Depths after the Fall. They managed to give themselves form, to carve out a niche in the Underworld, eating the ghosts haunting the dark corridors. They are the only ones that know the location of few remaining tunnels that lead to the void below. Of course, you don’t need those tunnels per se. You could always try to pass Leviathan.
It was inevitable that a few Neverborn surfaced. These invaders preyed on the still young human populations that roamed Earth, cut off from the spirits and the Realms above. Blood, while certainly different from Essence, has its own special properties. It’s not just biology, it’s so much more. The Chtonians found a veritable buffet. In their wake followed an army of creatures from the Lower Depths. They raised armies of the dead and fed them their own blood. They were stopped, eventually, by the Oracle of the Lead Coin, who plugged the hole leading to the Lower Depths with the most powerful being below the Abyss, Leviathan. This creature was sleeping in the Anima Mundi when the Oracle reached down and awoke it. The Earth trembled as it tore itself from the dreamtime and gave itself reality. It was made to sleep by the Atlanteans long ago, fearful as they were of its power. The Oracle, a member of the royal family, knew about the secret incantations they used to put it to sleep. She never dared use them, for its power was to great. Her bet paid of, the creature saw the damage the Neverborn were doing and plugged the hole at the end of the world. The few stragglers on Earth were hunted down by Mages, Werewolves and even some prehistoric Hunters.
